Theme: Commemorating the Passage and Signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1968

On April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, sending shockwaves across the United States. In response to his assassination, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1968 on April 10, and it was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on April 11, 1968.

While we honor the work and activism of those who fought during the Civil Rights Movement, the struggle to protect and preserve our basic civil and human rights continues today.

A distinguished panel of scholars representing Morgan State University and Harford Community College will lead an engaging and thought-provoking discussion on the Civil Rights Movement through the lens of African American history. Their presentation will explore the historical context and significance of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, examine key figures and grassroots efforts that shaped the movement, and reflect on the ongoing struggle for racial and social justice.
